Andres Algaba is an FWO postdoctoral researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, focusing on the transparency of large language models and their impact on scientific research. Additionally, he contributes to the VUB strategy on the use of generative AI by students, lecturers, researchers, and staff. As a member of the Young Academy, he advocates for evidence-based policy and public debate on the rapid evolution of AI and its societal implications.

Description of the session:
Large Language Models (LLMs) have evolved beyond basic natural language processing tasks, demonstrating remarkable capabilities in, for example, mathematical problem-solving and code generation. This expansion of capabilities has led to rapid adoption in scientific research, where LLMs are now being applied to support data science analysis, assist in experiments, and integrate into larger systems for scientific discovery. As researchers experiment with LLMs as autonomous research agents, we are witnessing the emergence of LLM-driven scientific workflows capable of generating hypotheses, designing experiments, analyzing results, and refining theories. While the current systems still have some limitations, early evidence suggests that LLMs can generate novel insights, accelerate discovery, and augment human reasoning in scientific research.
