FARI – AI for the Common Good Institute has collaborated with the European Parliament’s Multimedia Centre to make artificial intelligence, data and robotics technologies more accessible. This initiative enables journalists to better illustrate and explain these complex innovations to the general public.

Making AI and robotics accessible to journalists

Artificial intelligence (AI), data and robotics technologies are ubiquitous in our society, but their complexity makes them difficult to explain and illustrate in the media. Journalists, in particular, face the challenge of making these abstract concepts visual and understandable to a wide audience. This technical barrier often limits the ability of reports to inform effectively on these subjects.

FARI’s environments

With the aim of making these technologies more intelligible, FARI – AI for the Common Good Institute offers a Test & Experience Center designed to make artificial intelligence (AI), data, and robotics more accessible and understandable.

This center showcases the research findings of FARI-affiliated research groups by presenting them through demonstrator prototypes specifically created to be engaging and easy to understand. The goal is to translate complex research into tangible, real-world applications that visitors can interact with, allowing them to see how these technologies work and how they can be applied.

As a result, the Test & Experience Center bridges the gap between complex academic research and practical, everyday applications. It aims to increase awareness and understanding of advanced technologies among a wide audience, including local organizations, public authorities, and the general public. By providing accessible and relevant examples, the Centre helps foster greater adoption of these technologies, demonstrating their potential benefits and encouraging their integration into various sectors of society.

Recently, FARI  has launched the CAVE (Cave Augmented Virtual Environment) as a continuation of its Test and Experience Center. The CAVE features an advanced virtual environment with three large screens, ceiling and floor projections, and 3D glasses with motion-tracking goggles, creating a highly immersive experience. This innovative setup allows users to interact with digital content as if they were physically present, offering detailed simulations and new insights. It is especially useful for research, training, and scenario planning, providing a clearer view of complex data and real-world scenarios.

A collaboration with the European Parliament

This extensive capability in demonstrating and visualizing advanced technologies positioned FARI to recently join forces with the Multimedia Centre of the European Parliament to create a video clip on these technologies, with images from the Test and Experience Center and the CAVE, as well as from the Al Experience Center of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.  This collaboration has produced an informative audiovisual resource that is now available for free to anybody who wants to illustrate concepts related to AI, robotics or data.

Thanks to this initiative, FARI and the European Parliament are enabling journalists to cover emerging technologies more effectively, while making these areas more accessible to the general public. This video is an invaluable tool for enriching reporting and facilitating the dissemination of clear, understandable information on subjects that are increasingly shaping our daily lives.
